Major-General (Rtd) Joseph Nkaissery was both a tough soldier and politician. In life he was both a no-nonsense general in the military as he was an avid debater in parliament as well as a tough-talking Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Nkaissery will be remembered for his uncompromising and hard positions he took on security matters both in the country and outside.
After he took over as the Interior CS, Nkaissery not only transformed the battered image of Kenya’s security forces following unprecedented terror attacks in the country by Somali based Al Shabaab terror group, but also quickly stamped his authority on the security docket.
The Interior CS, died at Karen Hospital a few hours after he was admitted for a check-up. Earlier in the afternoon he had accompanied President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto for national prayers at Uhuru Park in the afternoon.
Reports indicate that after the Uhuru Park function he went back to his office before proceeding to another event at Bomas of Kenya.
Chief of Staff and Head of the Public Service Joseph Kinyua confirmed the news of Nkaissery’s demise in a statement.

“It is with deep sorrow and shock that we announce the sudden passing on of Interior CS Retired General Joseph Nkaissery. Gen. Nkaissery passed on at Karen Hospital in Nairobi a few hours after being admitted for a check-up. The country to be updated as more information becomes available,” the statement said in part.
He was initially an ODM MP before being picked by President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration for the post of Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Nkaissery was born on 28th November 1949. He was the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government.
On 2 December 2014, Joseph Nkaissery was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta for the post of Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, to replace Joseph Ole Lenku.
Prior to his nomination he was the Member of Parliament for Kajiado Central constituency on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
His last job in the army before retiring was as a commandant of the Armed Forces Training College and GOC Westcom.

He retired in December 2002 after 29 years of service. He held the parliamentary seat for Kajiado central since 2003 when he trounced David Sankori of KANU.
However, his sudden death on Saturday morning has not only shocked the country but also opened a sea of speculation.
Nkaissery’s death come a month to the August 8, 2017 General Election. Just before the 2013 General Election, then Minister for Internal Security, Prof George Saitoti and his Deputy Joshua Ojode died in a helicopter crash at Ngong Hills.
As the country await the doctors’ report on what could have caused Nkaissery’s death, Kenyans on social media and specifically on Twitter had their say. Sample the tweets below;

Nelson Mandela once said: “A critical, independent, and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy. The press must be free from state interference. It must have the economic strength to stand up to the blandishments of government officials. It must have sufficient independence from vested interests to be bold and inquiring without fear or favor. It must enjoy the protection of the constitution, so that it can protect our rights as citizens.”
