Pope Leo XIV on Saturday welcomed representatives of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to the Vatican, praising the movement as one of the spiritual gifts through which God continues to renew and strengthen the Church.
Addressing members of charismatic communities, prayer groups, evangelisation schools and leaders of CHARIS, the international service body of the Renewal, the Holy Father described the movement’s spiritual vitality as a blessing for Catholics across the world.
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal emerged in the late 1960s following the Second Vatican Council and has since grown into a worldwide movement encompassing prayer groups, lay communities, evangelisation initiatives and ministries dedicated to spiritual formation.
While remaining fully rooted in Catholic teaching and sacramental life, the Renewal encourages believers to develop a deeper personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.
A central feature of the movement is its emphasis on the gifts and action of the Holy Spirit in the daily lives of Christians. Through prayer, praise and worship, reflection on Sacred Scripture, evangelisation and charitable outreach, participants seek a renewed experience of faith that strengthens their commitment to Christ and His Church. Since 2019, the diverse expressions of the Renewal have been united under CHARIS, established by Pope Francis to promote communion, service and collaboration throughout the movement.
The Charismatic Renewal plays a significant role within the Catholic Church by encouraging spiritual renewal among the faithful. It seeks to help Catholics rediscover the grace received through Baptism and Confirmation, deepen their participation in the sacraments, strengthen parish life and inspire missionary outreach.
The movement has also contributed to ecumenical dialogue by fostering prayer and cooperation with Christians from other traditions while maintaining fidelity to Catholic doctrine. Through its emphasis on prayer, evangelisation and service to the poor, the Renewal aims to equip ordinary Catholics to become active witnesses of the Gospel in their families, workplaces and communities.
Reflecting on the movement’s development over the decades, Pope Leo recalled the appreciation expressed by his predecessors. He noted that Saint Paul VI viewed the Renewal as a response to growing secularisation, while Pope St John Paul II praised its missionary zeal.
Pope Benedict XVI, meanwhile, highlighted its emphasis on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and Pope Francis famously described it as a “flood of grace” intended for the entire Church.
The Pope expressed his desire to strengthen the relationship between the See of Peter and the worldwide family of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, highlighting five key dimensions of its spirituality: baptism in the Spirit, prayer of praise, the Word of God, communion and charity.
Speaking about baptism in the Spirit, Pope Leo said the Renewal’s journey of faith begins with a personal encounter with the Holy Spirit that enables believers to experience more fully the grace already received through Baptism. Such encounters, he explained, deepen awareness of God’s love and transform faith from a mere concept into a living relationship with the Father.
The Holy Spirit, he said, brings reconciliation, peace and freedom while opening hearts to hope and strengthening confidence in Christ’s unfailing love.
“From this experience of the Holy Spirit comes the inner desire to be witnesses and heralds of his love,” the Pope said, encouraging members to bring God’s consolation to those suffering from loneliness, discouragement and spiritual emptiness.
Turning to prayer, Pope Leo reflected on the distinctive place of praise and worship within the Charismatic tradition. He explained that an encounter with the Holy Spirit often leads believers into a more spontaneous and heartfelt dialogue with God, marked by gratitude, thanksgiving and adoration.
“Worship and praise, which are so characteristic of your gatherings, are essential aspects of Christian prayer,” he said, noting that the Renewal has helped many Catholics rediscover these important dimensions of spiritual life.
The Holy Father also emphasised the central importance of Sacred Scripture within the Renewal. The same Holy Spirit who inspired the biblical authors, he said, continues to make God’s Word alive and active in the Church today.
Scripture serves as a source of spiritual nourishment, comfort and guidance, helping believers discern God’s will in daily life while enriching both personal and communal prayer.
Reflecting on the theme of communion, Pope Leo stressed that the Holy Spirit is the source of unity within the Church. He noted that members of the Renewal have a particular appreciation for the Spirit’s role in fostering harmony among different charisms, communities and ecclesial movements.
The Pope also highlighted the movement’s longstanding commitment to Christian unity, encouraging continued efforts to build relationships with Christians of other denominations through prayer and mutual understanding.
Concluding his reflections on the five pillars, Pope Leo described charity as one of the clearest signs of life in the Spirit.
“The renewed presence of the Spirit has awakened in you a new capacity to love,” he said, referring to a love directed both towards God and towards neighbours, especially those who are poor, vulnerable or suffering.
The Pope praised the many charitable works and social initiatives that have emerged from the Charismatic Renewal and urged members to remain attentive to those most in need.
“I invite you, then, to keep alive this love for the poor, which reveals the true face of God,” he said.
In closing, Pope Leo encouraged members of the Renewal to continue serving the Church with humility and dedication.
“Put yourselves at the service of your dioceses and parishes,” he urged. “Take care never to give way to the desire for self-promotion, or the pursuit of power or personal prestige.”
The Pope concluded by praying that the Holy Spirit would always remain a source of light, guidance and strength for individuals and communities engaged in the mission of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal throughout the world.
