Ghana’s undercover investigative reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas and Kenya’s Patrick Mayoyo have been declared the winners of the 10Th KC Kulish Award for Excellence in Journalism.
Mr Anas was declared the overall winner while Mr Mayoyo was runner-up during a colourful ceremony held in New Delhi India which the two journalists did not attend. Mr Anas scooped US$ 11,000 for the top prize.
Anas expose in the Crusading Guide newspaper, ‘Anas Floors Derry’, which revealed rampant corruption in Ghana’s judiciary won him the top award.
The ‘KC Kulish International Award for Excellence in Journalism’ was instituted in 2007 to promote the best works of journalist teams around the world. It is also to recognise journalists who fight for human rights and freedom through journalistic practice.
Kenyan referee Aden Marwa who was to officiate at the World Cup was kicked out following an expose by Anas on bribery in football in Africa.
Mr Mayoyo’s story; “Rift Valley Railways firm under probe over use of world bank billions” that was published by The Sunday Standard won him the accolade.
The story revealed how more than Sh 17 billion (US$ 164) in World Bank loans advanced to Rift Valley Railways (RVR) to repair the Kenya-Uganda railway was instead stolen through an intricate scheme of over pricing of locomotives and money laundering.
The story detailed how part of Ksh 17 billion (US$164 million) loans meant to improve RVR’s services by buying new locomotives was used on purchasing used ones that were modified at a cost of six times their value.
Mr Mayoyo a former deputy news editor with Daily Nation is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Daily Reporter www.reporter.co.ke and the Kenyan head of India’s content development and syndication platform The Pebble.
Last year, the same story won him The Nobert Zongo Investigative Journalism Prize an award of excellence to reward the best works of Investigative journalism in Africa.
Both Mr Anas and Mr Mayoyo multiple journalism award winners and leading investigative journalists in Africa.
The R.AGE an investigative journalism team from Malaysia won the 11Th KC Kulish International Award for Excellence for its Student/Trafficked (rage.my/trafficked) undercover investigations, which exposed an international human trafficking syndicate operating through Malaysian colleges.
